Seize the Moments

A couple of evenings ago, D and I chatted about change and particularly how I have changed over the past (almost) six months.

It stemmed from a bit of an outburst from Miss. D (with a little support from Miss. L) when we suggested climbing Snowdon next Summer. Anyone would have thought we'd suggested we pack a few sandwiches, some sunscreen and a warm coat and take a hike up Everest! It was all very hormonal and ended with her taking herself up to bed (to be fair, she isn't very well at the moment).

Monday, 18 September 2017

Can you believe it? D only went and abandoned me for almost a whole week. I know disgraceful behaviour, how dare he? He did though, he upped and left with his best mate! And did they just pop to the pub? No. No they did not, they drove all the way to Scotland, and when I say Scotland I am talking way, way north to the mountains. I'm still not convinced that their Gretna Green stop was really just a refreshment break, but neither of them seems to have come back wearing a wedding ring, so we'll just let that one lie.

Goodbye Holidays - Hello School

So it's been a long old time since I last wrote a post, the kids were off school and much as I would love to tell you how crazy busy we've been, I can't. Well I can, but it's not been all fun and excitement I'm afraid. You see, I no longer have little people and so they tend to go off and do there own thing, leaving yours truly at home twiddling my thumbs and having conversations with our handsome little orange doggy, Max. As of today, though, the holidays are over and both girls are back at school. Miss. L went yesterday and had a ball (Year 7's started back a day earlier), let's see how long that lasts.

Not The End!

Finally, the long summer holidays have arrived. Sadly, no one told the sun and it appears to have packed up its belongings and gone on a holiday of it's own leaving us with some rather lovely grey clouds that look (in the words of Miss. D) grumpy and which seek only to share their misery by weeping upon us at every available opportunity. I cannot tell a lie though, I was somewhat grateful to the grumpy clouds for getting sports day cancelled last Thursday; there's nothing quite so bad as having to endure an afternoon of non competitive sports. Well there is something worse and that is enduring your child's final day of primary school on just two hours sleep.

No More Walks

I a bit worried. Mummy keeps taking me out for walks. Me know that sound a bit crazy for a little orange doggy to say, but I really not sure what is wrong with her! Me keep lying on the sofa and hoping that it will be a really hot day. Her not take me out when it too hot. Her says that my little paws will get burnt and sore and I will get too hot and be a poorly doggy, so me know her still love me lots. That not explain why her keep making me go out though.

Don't Panic - OK Panic

Hopefully, you can see the 'don't panic' written on that mug. That is how my morning was supposed to be. I was supposed to get up, do the housework, get Miss. L to school then come home, walk the dog and relax a bit before hitting the supermarket (apparently you have to have food in the house in order to cook). So that was the plan, unfortunately, I had omitted to send the memo to Monday and this is how it actually went.

The Final Countdown

Don't panic! I am not writing a post about that classic rock anthem by 80's rock band Europe, but hands up if you're old enough to remember them. No, you're safe, this is a post about the final countdown to the end of term. Yes folks, the long summer holidays are almost upon us and being a good and organised parent, I have every single minute of those holiday weeks, planned and organised to within an inch of their life... have I heck? I'm too busy concentrating on getting through this final week.

Transition Week

Yes, it is indeed time for change. Not only are we counting down to the end of the school year, but we are closing one door and opening another. The end of an era is upon us, as Miss. L joins her big sister at secondary school. No more school runs for me, as of September Miss. L will be walking with Miss. D; it's going to save me an absolute fortune in petrol and it needs to, given the cost of secondary school uniform, but we'll come back to that later on.

Why He's Not My Best Friend

I am a huge lover of trashy TV. Programmes that don't really require me to concentrate on them. For the most part I am blogging whilst watching TV, so as a general rule, I have no idea what is going on. One of my favourite shows to 'not watch' whilst blogging is 'Say Yes to the Dress'. What I wouldn't give to work in a wedding dress shop, surrounded by tulle, lace and silk which has been lovingly crafted into ballgowns, mermaids and fit and flares. Yes, minus the bridezillas, that would be my ideal job. Anyway, back to the point. It was whilst 'not watching' that my ears pricked up on hearing a bride use that age old phrase when talking about her hubby to be, 'he's my best friend,' sigh. Well ladies, let me tell you now, D is not and will never be my best friend.

Catch Up Time!

Sorry, sorry, sorry. I have been so rubbish with the blog this week, but honestly, I have the best excuse (or excuses) ever. Well actually that is debatable, because one could argue that each excuse could itself have been a stand alone blog post, but clearly none of them were and hence I am forced to apologise profusely to you, dear readers.

'So what, pray, are you fabulous excuses?' Well, you are more that entitled to ask and even more entitled to an adequate answer so here goes.

Happy Days Part 2

Well here we are, part 2 of our very busy weekend and by far the absolute best part. You'll see why in a moment. Just in case you haven't seen it you can catch up with part 1 here, as you can see, it really was fabulous, but Sunday really was the icing on the cake.

Happy Days Part 1

Oh my goodness, lovely readers, I am so happy after having the most amazing weekend. Tired, but happy. It has been a super busy, but fun weekend. Get me, two busy, fun filled weekends in a row; is that even allowed for parents? I have a tendency to rebel against rules on occasion, so if it's not allowed I've just broken another rule. Oops!

Swings & Roundabouts

This weekend was supposed to be a quiet one, but somehow that didn't work out at all. Starting on Friday when I ended up with an impromptu sleepover.

Miss. D was supposed to be going to her dad's for the weekend, but one of her friends needed to stay over, so that then led to, 'Mum can another friend stay over too?'. Being a nice mummy and liking Miss. D's friends, obviously I said yes. The sleepover was a success, we ordered pizza and then the girls did what teenage girls do, disappeared off out for a bit (giving me some much needed peace and quiet) and the best part, they didn't keep me awake all night, or any of the night.

Living Together

Another week and yet another tragedy has struck our shores. I've avoided writing about the terrorist attacks and the Grenfell Tower disaster. I like to try and keep the blog as light hearted as possible, but the news I woke up to yesterday and the social media response to it has played on my mind now for twenty four hours and I need to verbalise it. With this in mind, please bear with me as this may not flow particularly well and may become a bit of a word dump. I apologise now.

Dog Walking Etiquette

The sun is shining and only a few fluffy white clouds are slowly drifting across a beautiful, blue sky. What more could a dog owner ask for? Of course, our four legged canine friends need to be walked every day, come rain or shine, but it's so much more pleasant for the human if the weather is nice. There really is nothing worse than the smell of wet dog after a rainy day walk, and my word does that odour linger!

Thankfully, it is not raining today and so our little orange doggy is not smelling damp and unpleasant (although he does need a shower). He is currently lounging on the sofa, absolutely shattered having had a nice long walk in the sunshine. Don't worry, we were hugely responsible and went out early this morning before it gets too warm. Dogs and heat don't mix, and their wee paws can be burnt on very hot pavements. Ouch!

Celebrating Wednesday's #26

Well we're back this week with a new month to celebrate, as well as Wednesday. Apologies for not posting last week, but we're here now and so without further ado, let's see what we are celebrating this week...

Tuesday, 6 June 2017

Not Acceptable

Where to start? The last couple of weeks have been truly awful haven't they and I had absolutely no intention of writing about the terrorist attacks in Manchester and London and that still stands, at least directly; indirectly I am going to write about them because yesterday something came to light on the news that really did make my blood boil.

Summer Sunshine - The Downside

Yes I know, it's not actually summer yet and nor will it be for another month, but someone forgot to send the memo to Mother Nature and frankly, that is just fine with me.

And yet, there is a problem with the sun raising it's beautiful head and shining upon us. No, it's not the heat, nor the risk of sunburn; you just slather on the sunscreen and hide in the shade. Nor is it the pesky bugs that like to take a nibble out of you. No it is far, far worse than that, at least it is for many of us ladies.

Celebrating Wednesday's #25

Hello and welcome back to our little celebration corner of the blog. Today is going to be just a little bit different. I had planned to give this segment a miss this week, mainly because I really wasn't too keen on any of the days that are being celebrated. However, in light of recent events, I feel there is something that is important and truly worthy of celebration...

A Special Friend

I was talking to D yesterday, or rather 'Whatsapping' him, as you do, and the conversation we were having reminded me of a certain friend that a much younger Miss. L had. This friend was very important to her and was almost always around; rarely was there a time when we were without said friend. However, as the years passed, that little friend gradually spent less time with us and eventually didn't visit anymore.

It's Mine!

Oh little orange me is such a handsome boy. Me do love to look at the pictures mummy takes of me and see just how handsome I is. Me is also a very important little boy. I am the bestest doggy in the whole widest world, me know because my peoples are always telling me.

This weekend me not have my girls at home, so mummy took me to see nanny and grandad. Little orange me loves going to see them because them spoil me still not so keen on Winnie though. Me not really sure why her is still there. Mummy says it's because Winnie is nanny and grandad's little orange doggy, but me should be the only orange doggy. Still, me is trying super hard to be nice to her and to play with her, but me is not going to let her think her own the house, just because her live there. Oh no!

Little Dragonfly

Dragonflies. They're so pretty aren't they, and I get so excited when I see one buzz past on a warm, sunny day. However, they are so much more than just pretty. They're pretty darn good predators, and given that one thing they like to munch on is the pesky mosquito, I am definitely promoting them to top of my favourite insects list (or at least I would, if I had one).

They also hold great symbolic meaning for many people, two of which are strength and change. Which leads us very nicely on to what I've been up to, but first a wee bit of background.

Passion Fruit

Apologies to anyone reading this post and expecting a lovely informative piece on horticulture, you will be sorely disappointed. I am not well versed in all things flora and fauna, and have previously alluded to the fact that I can't even keep a simple pot plant alive. Nope this post is about gifts. To be more precise, gifts from my other half. It is not a rant, it is not a complaint because D, as well as being all round amazing, is super thoughtful and great at choosing gifts. So I guess you could say, this is a huge public thank you.

Celebrating Wednesday's #24

Hurrah! It's Wednesday again which means we're on the downhill journey to the weekend! It also means we can have our little midweek celebration, just because, no excuse needed. I'm going to be honest with you here, and please do keep it amongst ourselves, no wagging tongues...but this week, well it was all a little uninspiring. However, thanks to my love of all things cake, I had to go with our chosen topic...

Weekend Drinking?

Now before we get started here, may I make quite clear that all weekend, the only drink to pass my lips was a small glass of White Zinfandel with a large lunch, and very nice it was too. I was driving the rest of the weekend, so that was any further drinking well and truly off the menu for me, because as we established in last week's post Going 'Out' Out, I am a total lightweight!

The General Election - A Dog's View

Sorry, I am kind of hijacking Max's page a bit here, but last week my polling card arrived and his reaction to it made me think that I should really be asking him some questions about his view of the upcoming General Election. So with the help of a few other people, I've put together a handful of questions. Please bear with us, I've no idea how this is going to go, he can be a little fickle at times.

Why I Struggle With Faith

Years ago, I could never have envisioned sitting down and writing a post like this and the reason I am writing it now, is people have asked me about my faith (or not, as the case may be). Turn the clock back and I was totally committed and involved in my church. I read my Bible daily and used Bible Study notes. I only listened to Christian worship music and I only socialised with people from church (because that's really healthy - not). I had no doubts, I had no questions. This was my life and this was my supportive church family, people who would always be there for me.

Celebrating Wednesday's #23

Welcome back to our Celebrating Wednesday's segment. Once again, there was a wealth of topics to choose from today and all of them very interesting. However, the one I settled on was chosen purely for nostalgic reasons and because for some reason I find the subject of this week's topic really rather romantic.

Going 'Out' Out

Get me, a full-time mum going 'out' out! Let's face it, once our little cherubs arrive, the days and particularly the nights out, become less and less frequent; in part because all our friends are also parents and finding a babysitter is like trying to find a needle in a haystack, and partly (or should that be largely) because we're too darned knackered to go out after a day looking after the kids. However, my girls are not so little anymore, and they spend every other weekend with their dad, so when the opportunity to go 'out' out arose, I grabbed it with both hands.

Celebrating Wednesday's #22

Yes believe it or not, it is indeed Wednesday again. I don't know about you, but whilst I love a bank holiday, they play havoc with the rest of the week. Since Easter, I've not had a clue what day it is, but I am assured that today is indeed Wednesday, and so here I am with this week's celebration.

So get yourself ready to celebrate...

A New Path

What can I say? Life is good, right now. Not that it wasn't before, you understand, but right now it's particularly good and I am loving the new path I'm on. More's the point, I couldn't have asked for a better person to travel this new path with. I'd never intended to meet and start dating someone quite so soon, but sometimes, just sometimes things happen for a reason and meeting D has had a huge impact on me.

Celebrating Wednesday's #21

So this is the first Wednesday that I've celebrated for quite some time. It's been lovely taking a break from the blog, but I must confess I have quite missed our Wednesday celebrations.

Would you believe it, there were nine, yes nine celebrations to choose from today. I was tempted by a few, Help a Horse Day, Stationery Day because who doesn't love an excuse to covet yet more unneeded stationery? However, there was one celebration that really caught my eye and appealed to my sometimes random sense of humour, and so without further ado, I present to you...

Pause for Thought

Oh my goodness it has been such a long time since I wrote anything! Did you miss me? Probably not, let's be honest, my blog is teeny weeny and there are so many amazing blogs out there with awesome content, you are sure to have been kept super busy.

So where have I been, what have I done, more importantly, why on earth have I not written a thing for three weeks or more? Well lovely readers, I have been a busy girl, but I also just wanted to take a break. I've alluded to it before, but I write the blog essentially for myself, as my creative outlet and sometimes as a therapeutic tool, to make sense of things that may be going on. Whilst I love writing about all we've been doing, sometimes I almost feel obliged to do so and I fear that in doing that, my writing loses something. I'm not entirely sure if that makes any sense to anyone, but to me it does, so that's just fine.

'That's all well and good,' I here you cry, 'but you still haven't answered our questions about your whereabouts missus.' That is a very fair point, so I shall attempt to squeeze three weeks worth of stuff into a few paragraphs for you.

Easter holidays arrived and we packed the car up, got our Little Orange Dog and headed off to a fabulous, not so little, cottage in Devon for a week. Once we finally arrived, in the dark, and the pouring rain, and having turned the air in the car Fifty Shades of Blue (getting lost in rural Devon late at night is not fun) we settled in for the week. Obviously, having Max with us did limit what we could do, but having a heated indoor pool on site and a games room, meant the girls were more than happy.

To be honest, trying to get them out of the pool was not an easy task, but we did get out and fair to say that when we visited Salcombe, we weren't disappointed. Should you ever venture to this beautiful little seaside town, may I recommend the Salcombe Dairy Ice Cream. It was super scrummy and our Little Orange Doggy enjoyed licking the empty tubs (I'm not sure he should have had ice cream, but he wasn't complaining).

The second week of the holidays was spent at home and full of sleepovers and me running my 'Mum's Taxi' here, there and everywhere. We also had a fabulous day out at Chessington World of Adventures, though sadly we didn't get on the new Gruffalo ride as the queue was ridiculously long, but we live near enough that we can go back and try again.

That's more or less it. I could have written lots of posts over the past few weeks, but sometimes it's good to have a break. Oh and there is the slight issue of me maybe being just a little bit distracted by a rather lovely new man.

I wasn't really expecting to meet anyone just yet, but isn't that just how things work out sometimes. The best part is, he is like no one I have ever met before. Not only is he attractive, he's intelligent, loud, kind, crazy, thoughtful, exciting, caring and there is never a dull moment.  If I'm honest, this is probably the main reason, I've not written, but at least now you know. We've been on some fabulous dates and have lots more planned (I'm particularly excited about the rock climbing refresher course). So far though, the highlight for me has been watching him play drums with his band, and may I add, all of them are fantastic musicians and yes I absolutely will be writing a review of the next gig, if they let me. Anyway, I'm sure you are probably dying to know more (unless of course you actually know me in real life, in which case you are probably begging me to shut up), but I should really check with him before I write too much. So for now, I will just say, watch this space.

Celebrating Wednesday's #20

I took the week off last week, I do hope the lack of Wednesday Celebrations didn't ruin your week too much; you're a bright bunch so I'm fairly sure you managed to find something to celebrate anyway. However, here we are back again and ready to celebrate something really special to me, something almost as special as sloths, but not quite.

So without further ado, please get ready to celebrate this weeks very special day...

My New Best Friend

Hello lovely peoples. I not been doing much writing because Mummy's laptop thing not working like it should. Every time little orange me go to write, it goes black and me can't do a thing. It okay though, Mummy got a new one and that one works just like it should. I am such a happy boy because now I can tell you all about my new friend.

Actually, him not just my friend, him is my best friend and me love him lots, but not as much as me loves my peoples. My peoples are the bestest peoples in the whole widest world. Me love them and them love little orange me.

Remembering Dad's on Mother's Day

It's Mothering Sunday, the day where we say a big thank you to our mum's and hopefully get spoilt rotten, if we happen to be a mum. Up and down the country there will be mum's who have received flowers, chocolates, breakfast in bed and numerous other gifts and kind gestures and rightly so. Mum's are important people, we cook, we clean, we clothe; we take the role of nurse, teacher, taxi driver and counsellor. Let's face it, being a mum is a job with many roles and huge list of required skills, so getting a little bit of recognition once a year is lovely.

National CSE Awareness Day 2017

Today is National CSE Awareness Day. For those of you not aware, CSE stands for Child Sexual Exploitation. Written down in its full form it's a terrifying combination of words which should never need to be put together, but sadly it is a very real danger and one which can, and does affect many young people and their families.

Young people from all walks of life can become victims of CSE, boys and girls, and yes, even children from nice, well adjusted families. The most frightening part is the control that their abuser has over them, so as parents it is vital that we know what to look out for, so that if we are unfortunate enough to come across it, we are able to tackle it in it's early stages.

Pushing Me Away (or Dear Curry's PC World)

Before you get too excited, this is not a post about relationships of any kind. No it's far less interesting than that. However, it has left me fuming, or it would do were I not so laid back, I'm just a little bit frustrated.

So my laptop is working, but it's not quite what it was and it really will need to be replaced soon. With this in mind, off I pop to Curry's PC World. Well I say that, I did a fair bit of online research too, but wanted to actually see the laptops, before making a decision and hence, I find myself writing this post, which shall take the form of an open letter...

Celebrating Wednesday's #19

Here we are again, another Wednesday, another excuse to celebrate something. What will it be today, well let me tell you, today is going to be just a little bit different. Today we are not celebrating just one carefully chosen theme, but four.

Each week there are several themes I can choose from, and out of those, there is always one that really shouts at me, but not so this week. This week, none of them is really saying, write about me, I'm fun, different, quirky and so, I present to you this week's celebrations...

The End of a Chapter

I'm not sure if I should be writing this post or not. If I'm completely honest, I don't actually know how this post is going to turn out. I've no idea what I want to say, or how I want to say it, but my head needs clearing out and the way I do that is to write. Writing is, for me, a creative outlet, but also a therapeutic tool; so I suppose it stands to reason that I would feel the need to write at this time.

As a general rule, my posts are always very clear in my head. I know what it is I want to say and I have a very good idea of the shape it will take. So right now, I feel like a fish out of water and I'm just trusting my fingers to hit the right keys and produce something that is vaguely readable and well, hopefully won't be a load of mumbo jumbo.

School Run Fun (or not)

I don't know about you, but I'm generally pretty organised and laid back. I have a set morning routine that has served me very well over the years. And, over those years, I have developed it to incorporate time for 'emergencies' so that we never actually leave the house late for school (even though, I tell the girls we are on occasion, running late). However, hard as it is to believe, other people do run late, I know, shocking isn't it?

Tea and Teens

Tea! I love it, I drink rather a lot of it. If you are a regular reader, you'll know how important tea is to me. If it snows, I'll panic buy tea bags. If I've run out of milk, I'll drink it black. If I'm bored, I'll put the kettle on. I really am a complete and utter tea addict.

I also love having visitors and, being the good English Rose that I am, I always offer tea to my guests, or the other stuff, you know, from the dark (which in my opinion should never be drunk, but instead used to make cake). However, offering tea has become a bit awkward of late.

Celebrating Wednesday's #18

Welcome to Wednesday! Congratulations, you have made it to the half way point in the week, so pop the kettle on and take a short break to reward yourself. Whilst you're sitting there with tea (or coffee) in hand why not hang around for a bit and find out what is special about this Wednesday.

There was an awful lot to choose from today, most notably, International Women's Day, but I have chosen not to write about that, although please do check out the website here to learn more about this very important day. Given that so many of us are bloggers, there really was only one day I could write about...

My Accidental Purchase

Have you ever been on a shopping trip and ended up buying something you really hadn't intended to buy? Come along now ladies and gents, be honest, I'm sure you have. Perhaps it was a new bag, or yet another pair of shoes that you really didn't need, but they were just so pretty, you had to give them a new home. Maybe you wandered into the Apple Store and came out with the latest iPhone. However, I'm going to hazard a guess that you haven't done as I did, because I made quite a spectacular accidental purchase.

Celebrating Wednesday's #17

Happy Wednesday lovelies! I cannot believe that not only is it Wednesday, but it is also March, so not only do we have a Wednesday to celebrate, but we have a month too! Yay! However, let us first find out what we will be celebrating today, 1st March...
